This will help you mingle with the natives, who are always happy to see a foreigners that has gone through the pains to learn about they way of life, and enjoy your trip more. Taiwan is territory unknown for many travelers so we have decided to provide some helpful pointers to avoid that dreaded faux pas.

Social Conventions

Life in Taiwan has a certain Chinese flavor, even when the country is a truly complex ethnic and cultural mix. This means that everyday life is marked by a noticeable amount of tradition and superstition. Ancient festivals and customs of yore are usually celebrated with both fervor and true adherence, traditional holidays are closely observed. Most people in Taiwan are very friendly and hospitality is held in high regard as a value to be observed. Handshaking is a common way to greet someone and there are no dress codes to worry about.

The Concept of Face

Also taken from the Chinese way of life is the concept of face. Face is a sort of pride although this has no direct translation in the West. This is a crucial element in Taiwanese society and it is considered an example of terribly bad manners to cause someone else to lose face. As a result of this, most Taiwanese don't show much emotion or express controversial opinions because they fear offending the other party. They are very timid and when trying to impress or just avoid any social mistakes it's often the best to follow a similar approach. This means gift giving (whether actual gifts or just offering to pay for something), moderating what you say and making sure that you're not yelling are very important. Remember, you are not taking a road trip USA so make sure you avoid speaking over someone else or getting into someone else's personal space.
