 Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is named the "Rose of the North" for the abundance of flowers that thrive in the cooler mountain climate. The surrounding of the city is blessed with an outstanding beauty in nature. If you want to get away from busy Bangkok, but still want to stay in a big city Chiang Mai is a very good choice.

The local people themselves are an unforgettable part of Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of silk, silver and wood are timeless souvenirs for visitors from all over the globe. Along with all this, a wide variety of accommodations, restaurants and entertainment all help to make Chiang Mai one of Thailand's prime tourist attractions.

Perhaps the best thing about Chiang Mai for visitors is that with a small amount of research and effort it is easy to find great places outside of the city offering trekking, tours, and locations which are what Northern Thailand is really about. Chiang Dao, Pai, Soppong, Mae Salong, Mae Hong Song, Chiang Saen, Mae Kam Pong and Mae Chaem are just a few of the gems awaiting the discerning traveller.

Chiang Mai is a very good place for shopping. Umbrellas made of sa paper, hilltribe crafts ,fabrics of countless types, delicate ceramics, replicated and genuine antiques, dazzling jewelry and gems, silverware of all sorts, lacquerware with intricate designs, rattan and wickerwork, and woodcarvings ranging from pictures to furniturel. Chiang Mai cottons and silks are of a very high quality and have innumerable fashion and furnishing applications.

Furniture/Woodcarving Chiang Mai is a major centre of furniture making. Major woods and materials include teak, rosewood and rattan. Woodcarving is a traditional northern Thai art featured in numerous temples.

The Night Bazaar on Chang Klang Road is the city's most famous shopping location and is a must for all visitors. It is a lively area with department stores, shops and stall vendors. It begins to come to life in the early evening and buzzes till midnight. If you are looking for all kind of Antiques, paintings, textiles, silverware and woodcrafts then this is the right place and in general everything is cheaper than Bangkok.

One of Chiang Mai's greatest attractions is Do Suthep , a 1,601m (5,250ft) high peak with panoramic views over the city and the river, Mae Ping. Climb the steep 300-step stairway which is magnificently flanked by undulating, seven-headed serpents or nagas leading to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep , perched on top of the mountain.

While in Chiang Mai you can visit the famous Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet! An early morning drive through beautiful scenery, with a stop at the Hot Springs at Maekajan, culminates in the chance to explore this world -famous spot, notorious for its opium trade! From a viewpoint set high on the hillside, there are magnificent views over the Mae Khong River to the physical triangle made by Burma, Laos and Thailand at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong River.
