 Manila

A curious mixture of old and new, Manila is a city of several parts. The closest the Philippines gets to a cosmopolitan city, the capital juggles Malay and Western influences in a country that has experienced colonisation by both Spain and America.

The modern city is actually made up of 15 originally separate cities, and is officially called Metro Manila, though most people find that Manila suffices. However, its multi-centre arrangement means that every area of the city has its shopping centre, entertainment and diversions, so you'll never be far away from some sort of activity.

On arrival, your senses will be assaulted by the usual sights and sounds of big city living with a heady mix of pollution and enormous throngs of people bustling around the busy shops and markets. But if you can manage to look beyond the dense population, there are many charming nooks and crannies that reward the tourist who takes time to explore before heading off for other destinations in the Philippines.

Rizal Park
Rizal Park is the city's largest open space, and is a pleasant place to stroll. There isn't a great deal to do here except relax among the formal gardens - the Japanese and Chinese gardens are particularly fine - and generally pass the time of day. Locals flock here on the weekend, and on Sundays there is usually some form of entertainment, either impromptu music from buskers or scheduled concerts at the park's auditorium. The park is named after Filipino revolutionary hero Dr Jose Rizal, who was executed here by the Spanish in 1896. The bronze statue in the middle of the park is of him. If you come here early in the morning you'll find locals going through their Tai Chi routines.

On any market transaction you are expected to haggle, starting at around half of the suggested price, although a settlement at around 60-75% is a reasonable final aim. Your best chance of getting bargains happens if you go early in the morning. As in China, the first sale is regarded as one for luck, so good discounts are given early on.

The Manila Hotel is a beautiful colonial style five-star hotel and a Manilan historic landmark. It first opened it doors in 1912, making it the oldest deluxe hotel in the city and is furnished in Philippine colonial style, which blends with its contemporary setting. The hotel offers four restaurants, full business facilities and a sports and health centre. Fronting Rizal National Park and Manila Bay, the hotel is just beside the Club Intramuros Golf Course. It is within easy walking distance to the old Spanish district of Intramuros.
